Turris Stagna

Stagno

Listen to the story

Turris Stagna, the tower of the pools, floats on the open sea of the map close to the Dalmatian coast, tied to no drawing and no road. Some of its letters have faded, yet the reading holds. Older research looked for it in Italy, in the sea off Brindisi or at a lagoon near Otranto crossed by the Via Traiana. It may well be Stagno in Croatia, on the narrow neck of land joining a long peninsula to the mainland. The word tower was probably a copyist's slip, repeated from the neighbouring Port Turris, so the label perhaps once read harbour of Stagna.
