Sinus Macedonicus
Golf von Saloniki (Miller)
Listen to the story
The Gulf of Thessaloniki in northern Greece is the water the map labels Sinus Macedonicus. Today the name is badly damaged: three letters have vanished and several others are faint, though still certain. The early printed editions of 1598 and 1753 read it in full. The same form appears in the Roman writer Pliny, and the historian Livy speaks of a Macedonian sea. Most ancient authors, among them the Greek geographer Strabo and the geographer Ptolemy, called the gulf Thermaic instead.
