Lake
Lacus Acerusius
Lago Fusaro
Listen to the story
Just below Lake Avernus the map draws a small oval lake by the coast and squeezes its name, Lacus Acerusius, between lake and road for lack of space. This is the Acherusian lake, named after the Acheron, a river of the underworld, and wrapped in the same legends as its neighbour; even ancient writers confused the two. Today it is the Lago Fusaro, a lagoon near Cumae behind a strip of beach, and in Roman times it was famous for its oysters. The philosopher Seneca described a villa on its shore.
