Listen to the story
Ad Aquas Albulas, 'at the whitish waters', takes its name from pale, foaming sulphur springs in the plain below Tivoli, which feed small lakes such as the Lago della Regina and whose smell carries far. The Romans prized them for healing wounds, Augustus used them for his ailing sinews, and Nero had the water piped into his Golden House in Rome. Green marble columns from the old baths now stand in Santa Maria Maggiore. On the map the name rides on the road from Rome, but the stretch on to Tivoli is missing, probably lost where it met the edge of a parchment sheet.
