Listen to the story
The Achei were a people on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, beyond the Cimmerian Bosporus, the strait we call the Strait of Kerch, where they lived alongside the Sindi. Ancient tradition made them Greek Achaeans who drifted there after the Trojan War, and found no place to settle except high in mountains of eternal snow, living by raiding. On the map the last two letters of the name stand oddly far apart. A nearby name, Acheon, is probably the same people or their settlement, though the map draws no distinction between them.
