Roman province
Sicilia
Listen to the story
Sicilia, the island of Sicily, bears its name in red letters, and part of its outline, on the left side, is edged in red as well. Rome made it its first province in 241 BC. The map rings the whole coast with road stations and adds a single road across the island, from Catania to Termini. Unusually, a Roman register of routes preserves two of these stretches from the very same source the Tabula drew on. Of the six colonies Augustus founded here, only three receive a picture, while Palermo, Taormina and Tindari stand as bare names. An older Greek name, Trinakria, was tied to the island's triangular shape.
